Segway Ninebot S vs S Plus – Detailed Feature Comparison:

Design

Segway Ninebot S vs S Plus - Design Comparison

When talking about the design, we don’t find much difference except that the Segway Ninebot S gives a slimmer look while the S-Plus does not.

In terms of design, the competition of Segway Ninebot S vs. Mini Pro results in a tie as both have almost the same design, while the S-Plus is a bit different.

The appearance of both hoverboards is futuristic, attractive, and sturdy, and if you want to tell the better one by looking at them, you simply cannot!

We like the Ninebot S because it delivers a sleek and slim look with portability in mind, while the Ninebot S-Plus gives a bulky look. Though the secret compartment justifies the bulky look of the S-Plus, it has, inside the knee bar, to carry a remote controller and camera.

To be more specific, the Ninebot S has the dimensions of 10.2 x 21.6 x 23.4 inches, while S-Plus has dimensions of 22.7 × 11.0 × 24.4 inches.

Moreover, Ninebot S offers two color options: black and white, while S-Plus is only available in white.

However, the one you like depends on your choice.

Riding Method

Both Segway Ninebot S and S-Plus share the same riding method.

To ride these self-balancing scooters, you need to follow these steps:

  1. Stand on the Segway Ninebot S or S-Plus with both feet, keeping them centered on the foot pads.
  2. Hold onto the kneebars with your knees for balance.
  3. Lean forward slightly to begin moving forward. The scooter uses sensors to detect the rider’s weight shift and will move in the direction the rider leans.
  4. To turn, shift your weight in the direction you want to go. The scooter will turn in that direction.
  5. To stop, stand upright, and the scooter will come to a stop.
  6. To dismount, stand upright and step off the scooter.

Both these rides offer different riding methods too.

The Ninebot S can be attached to Segway Ninebot GoKart, and GoKart Pro to ride it like a Gokart. Besides, it can also be attached to Ninebot MechaKit to ride it like a drifting and shooting chair.

In contrast, S-Plus cant be attached to any of the above-mentioned attachment kits. However, you can use the remote controller to make it follow you.

Note: It is essential to always wear a helmet and other protective gear while riding a Segway Ninebot S and S-Plus and follow local laws and regulations regarding this type of vehicle.

Range

When it comes to range, both the hoverboards are very different!

The Segway Ninebot S only covers a range of 13.7 miles (22 km) in a single charge, while the Ninebot S-Plus can easily cover 22 miles (35 km) in one charge.

This is a huge difference, and we think it is what accounts for the higher price of the S-Plus.

The range of Ninebot S is also good, but when compared to the S-Plus, we don’t think you will consider the latter.

If you want to travel short distances, the Ninebot S is a good choice as its range is fairly longer than many other hoverboards in the market.

However, if you want a much longer range for enjoying your time and traveling to different places, the Ninebot S-Plus is the best choice!

Motors

Both Segway Ninebot S and S-Plus operate on dual 400W motors, which collectively deliver the nominal power of 800W, which can maximize up to 800W x 2 = 1600W for the hoverboards.

So, we cannot declare a winner in this case because this feature is the same.

However, when compared to other hoverboards, their motor power is much higher. They can easily conquer minor obstacles and slightly inclined surfaces.

This adds to the convenience and durability of the Ninebot S and S-Plus, as the motor power determines the hoverboard’s performance.

Top Speed

The top speed of the hoverboard is very important, especially for adventure-lovers and expert riders.

The top speed of the Ninebot S is 10 mph (16 km/h), while that of Ninebot S-Plus is 12.5 mph (20 km/h). Although the difference is not big to us, it can be for some people.

The top speed of Ninebot S is less than the S-Plus. However, it is not as less as you think!

Even speeds of 6 mph are enough for a fun ride.

If you’re a beginner, this speed of 12 mph is very high for you, so we recommend riding the hoverboard at low speeds.

If you are an expert and want to hover in the air at top speeds, we think you should prefer Ninebot S-Plus.

However, Ninebot S is also not a bad choice at all.

Battery

Most people don’t think about the battery when purchasing a hoverboard. However, the battery is one of the essential parts of the hoverboard.

With a good battery, the hoverboard will function adequately, provide better mileage and protect the ride from exploding.

The Segway Ninebot S is equipped with a lithium-ion battery with a rated capacity of 236 Wh, while its continuous discharge power is 1000 Watts.

In contrast, the Segway Ninebot S-Plus is loaded with a lithium-ion battery with a rated capacity of 329 Wh, while its continuous discharge power of 1530 Watts. This is why S-Plus gives a significantly better range than Ninebot S.

Besides, both these scooters feature a smart Battery Management System (BMS) to protect the battery from over and under voltage, short circuits and overheating.

Moreover, the BMS also offers Auto-Sleep and Wake-up modes to conserve battery and provide detailed information on battery on the mobile application.

However, It is disappointing to see that batteries for both these models are difficult to replace, so the manufacturer can only replace them.

Charging Time

It is vital to ponder upon the charging time of your self-balancing hoverboard.

It is for various reasons, but primarily because if you are using the hoverboard for transportation, you will need to know how long it will take to charge so that you can plan your trip accordingly.

The Segway Ninebot S takes around 3 hours to charge, whereas S-Plus will take slightly an hour extra with 4 hours of total charging time.

Display Console

All the latest electric scooters are equipped with a display console to display essential information to assist the rider.

Although display consoles are rare in hoverboards and self-balancing scooters, Segway Ninebot S and S-Plus come with an exception. They both feature a similar display unit, located on the middle bar right above the platform.

The display unit features:

  • Battery level: Indicates the current battery power level. This battery icon has five bars. Each bar equals 20% of the battery.
  •  Speed Limit: A speedometer icon illuminates if speed limit mode is activated through the mobile app.
  •  Bluetooth: A Bluetooth icon appears steadily on the display when the ride is connected to its mobile app, while the icon blinks if it’s not connected.
  •  Lock: A lock icon appears on the display if the lock mode is enabled using the mobile app.
  •  Power Button: You can use the power button to turn On/Off the ride. Besides, the ride automatically turns off after 10 minutes if left idle or kept horizontal for 30 seconds.

Self-Balancing Feature

The self-balancing feature of the Segway Ninebot S and Ninebot S-plus is primarily similar and works through the use of gyroscopes, accelerometers, and motors.

These components work together to constantly monitor the position and movement of the Segway and make adjustments to keep it balanced.

When the Segway is in motion, the gyroscopes and accelerometers measure the tilt and orientation of the device and send this information to the onboard computer. The computer then uses this information to determine the amount of power that needs to be applied to the motors to maintain balance.

For example, if the Segway starts to tilt to one side, the computer will increase the power to the motor on the opposite side, causing the Segway to lean back toward an upright position. This process is constantly happening, with the computer adjusting the motors hundreds of times per second to keep the Segway balanced and upright.

Overall, the self-balancing feature of the Segway Ninebot S and S-Plus is a complex system that relies on advanced sensors and algorithms to keep the device stable and upright.

However, the S-Plus takes an edge here! It takes this self-balancing feature to the next level, as it comes with a remote controller that the user can use to control the ride, like an RC car, without having to ride it.

App Compatibility

Being equipped with all advanced features, both the Ninebot S and S-Plus offer app compatibility so you can ride in style with added convenience!

You can download the Segway App in your phone and control the hoverboard via Bluetooth.

You can adjust the ambient lights, speed, and monitor the battery status and anti-theft function in a click from your phone!

Besides, you can also perform vehicle self-diagnosis, and firmware upgrade.

This intelligent App management in both the hoverboards is a great step as it makes the hoverboard portable and easy to use.

Tires

The tires of a hoverboard should be flat-free and durable, as damaged tires not only increase the maintenance costs but also reduce the hoverboard’s life.

The Segway Ninebot S has strong 10.5-inch tires, while the Segway Ninebot S-Plus comes with 11-inch pneumatic tires.

It might be a difference for you, but half an inch can make a big difference!

It is because tires should be large and durable enough to tackle uneven and rough terrains, without decreasing the speed of the hoverboard.

Large-sized tires are considered to make the hoverboard an all-terrain hoverboard.

However, 10.5-inch tires are also better than many other off-road hoverboard companies whose tires are limited to 8.5-inch, while a regular hoverboard usually features 6.5″ inches tires.

The tires of both the self-balancing hoverboards offer the best performance as they have treads, are non-skid and have great shock-absorbing qualities.

They provide the perfect grip and don’t let the hoverboard slip, making you lose balance.

So, we can say that the tires of both Segway S and S-Plus are all-terrain, but going into depth, the Segway Ninebot S-Plus has more durable, large, and strong tires.

However, we think that the company should have extended the tires to 12-inch to make it an unmatched self-balancing hoverboard!

Climbing Angle

The climbing angle of the self-balancing hoverboard goes hand in hand with the motor power and tires.

As the motor power of both the hoverboards is same and the tire size is different by half an inch, we expected that the climbing angle would be almost the same.

Luckily, we were right!

Both the Ninebot S and S-Plus have a climbing angle of 15-degree.

It means that the self-balancing hoverboard can climb at least 15-degree on steep hills and bumps.

The climbing angle is good and makes them all-terrain hoverboards.

However, when considering the price, motor power, and tire size, we think that the climbing angle is less as some off-road hoverboards even offer climbing angles of 25 degrees!

Weight and Portability

The weight of the self-balancing hoverboard is also essential, as it determines whether or not you can carry it to different places.

The Segway Ninebot S weighs only 28 lbs. (12.8 kgs). This weight is ideal and makes the hoverboard easy to carry to different places.

On the other hand, the weight of Ninebot S-Plus left us in disappointment. It weighs 36 lbs. (16.3 kgs)! This makes the S-Plus heavier than its predecessor, making it a bit difficult to carry.

We expected the Ninebot S-Plus to be lightweight, but it comes in a standard weight offered by many other hoverboards.

So, the Ninebot S is very easy to carry and store. Strong adults can easily carry the S-Plus, but children may face difficulty in carrying it.

Apart from the weight, both of these vehicles have its knee bar shaped like a handle for easy-lifting. However, both of them are not foldable but compact enough to carry it in a car’s trunk.

The Segway Ninbot S-Plus also has the edge over Ninebot S in one portability segment, an “auto-follow” mode. If you are in a park or some other place and not in the mood to ride it or lift it, you can order it to follow you with a remote control.

Weight Capacity

There’s no difference between the weight capacity of Segway Ninebot S and S-Plus. Both can accommodate user weight up to 220 lbs. (100 kgs)

However, if we compare this weight capacity with other hoverboards, we find many others that can accommodate user weight up to 280 lbs.

If you are a normal adult, this weight capacity is okay for you.

However, higher weights can decrease the speed as well as the overall performance of the hoverboard.

We think these self-balancing hoverboards are ideal for normal-weighing teenagers and adults, while heavy adults should look for other alternatives.

Seat Attachment Kit

Gokart Kit attachment is a new feature seen in a few hoverboards.

This feature is great as it allows you to ride the hoverboard in two modes, either while sitting on the seat or standing on the deck.

Luckily, this feature is present in the Segway Ninebot S, making it an advanced and worth-the-try hoverboard. It is compatible with GoKart, GoKart Pro and Ninebot MechaKit.

All these seat attachment kits are safe and better for kids as you won’t lose balance while riding. Plus, it gives a new kind of experience.

However, we were disappointed after founding out that the Gokart kit feature is not present in the Segway Ninebot S-Plus!

The lack of this feature makes it lag behind its claims of being an advanced hoverboard.

So, if you want to enjoy riding your hoverboard with multiple options, you should prefer the Segway Ninebot S.

Frame

The frame of both the Segway Ninebot S and S-Plus is constructed from durable magnesium-alloy material.

This material is different from all others, as many hoverboard companies use aluminum frame.

The addition of magnesium-alloy frame is a good choice because it is up to one-third lighter than the aluminum frame.

They are also dent-resistant and have the ability to dampen vibrations and shield electromagnetic vibrations, even better than the aluminum frames.

Remote Control

The auto-follow mode is a new and advanced feature, and very few hoverboards have it.

Luckily, the Segway Ninebot S-Plus is equipped with the auto-follow mode, which you can enable from the remote controller, placed inside the secret compartment on the knee bar.

It means that you can control the device with the remote control or the intelligent chip.

When you’re not riding the hoverboard, turning on the auto-follow mode will make the S-Plus follow you.

The auto-follow mode is not present in its predecessor, the Ninebot S. However; it does operate on the remote control using mobile App.

Waterproof

Both, Segway Ninebot S and S-Plus are IP54 rated.

It is a good idea to look for a hoverboard with a high IP rating if you plan on using it in wet or dusty conditions.

This can help to ensure that the hoverboard is protected against water and dust damage and can help to extend its lifespan. However, it is essential to note that a high IP rating does not necessarily mean that the hoverboard is entirely waterproof or dustproof.

In this case, IP54 means both these hoverboards are resistant to minor water splashes and mild dust. So, it is always best to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and recommendations for the proper use and care of the hoverboard.

Customer Service

Customer service can be a key factor in your overall satisfaction with the product. If you have a problem with your self-balancing electric scooter, good customer service can make all the difference in getting it resolved quickly and effectively.

Segway is a well-known brand in the electric scooter industry and is known for offering good customer support. They have a dedicated customer service team that is available to assist customers with any questions or issues they may have with their products.

Segway offers a variety of ways for customers to get in touch with their customer support team, including phone, email, and live chat. They also have a comprehensive support center on their website, which includes a FAQ section, user manuals, and other helpful resources.

Overall, Segway has a reputation for providing good customer support and is known for being responsive and helpful when it comes to assisting customers with their electric scooters.

Riding Modes

Both of these models are on Learning mode by default with the speed limited to 4.3 mph (7 km/h).

Riders have to complete the New rider tutorial for first 0.6 miles (1 km) to unlock the speed limit mode, where the speed is limited to 6.2 mph (10 km/h).

Riders can disable to speed limit mode by connecting the ride with mobile app, to unlock the max. speed of 10 mph (16 km/h).

These models also feature “power assist” mode. It helps the rider steer the ride across the smooth slopes with out having to ride it or lift it.

As mentioned earlier, Auto-follow mode is an another amazing feature of S-Plus that is worth mentioning here too, that will enable the rider to control order the ride to follow it.

Boot Space

The Segway Ninebot S-Plus has a built-in boot space hidden under the its knee bar cover. This storage compartment can carry a remote controller (which is already inside it) and a camera (you have to buy it separately). Both of these can be secured to their place by a built-in retaining strap.

You need to press the button to unlock the cover and pull off the lid. To close the cover, you need to insert the bottom first and press the upper side until the click sound.

On top of that, The S-Plus’s self-balancing features enables it to easily carry your stuff and follow you! You can simply put on the basket full of stuff on it and enable the “follow” mode.

Unfortunately, Segway Ninebot S doesn’t have any such feature or boot space.

Camera

A great feature of the Segway Ninebot S-Plus is its holder camera.

This camera is sold separately and is easily mounted on the S-Plus.

So, you can record amazing videos and also take group photos and selfies through the app.

Unfortunately, the holder camera cannot be mounted into the Segway Ninebot S.

Lights

Segway Ninebot S Plus’s Smart Safe Lighting System

Both, the Segway Ninebot S and S-plus have an intelligent and safe lighting system. The lights on this hoverboard are adjustable and ambient. They are in the front and the rear horizontal area.

The front lights glow the most and are reliable. The rear lights are smart and detect the vehicle’s movement to act as a turning indicator and braking light.

The Ninebot S-Plus is one step ahead here as it has a hub light on its wheel too, making it aesthetically appealing and noticeable from the sides.

Recommended Age

Both, Segway Ninebot S and S-plus are recommended for riders ages between 16 and 60 years or having a height within the range of 4’3″ to 6’6″.

It is highly recommended to stay within the age limits defined by the Segways, as these electric scooters are designed and built to specific safety standards and guidelines.

These standards may vary depending on the intended age range of the user. An electric scooter not designed for your age group can increase the risk of injury or accidents.

Additionally, the manufacturer often sets age limits based on the physical abilities and maturity levels of the average user in that age group. For example, younger children may not have the coordination, strength, or judgment to operate an electric scooter safely.

In contrast, older adults may need to gain the physical ability to handle the acceleration or braking of a scooter designed for younger users.

It is also worth noting that some jurisdictions may have laws or regulations that prohibit the use of electric scooters by individuals below a certain age. These laws are in place to help ensure the safety of all scooter users and pedestrians, and it is essential to follow them.

Safety Features

Segway never disappoints its customers in terms of safety features.

Both the Segway Ninebot S and S-Plus have almost the same safety features.

Both are equipped with a self-balancing feature that allows you to maintain balance even when riding on steep hills or bumpy areas.

Also, both the Ninebot S and S-Plus have IP54 water-resistance technology, meaning that the hoverboard is safe to ride in the rain.

The body is protected, and water and dust cannot seep into the machinery and damage its internal parts.

The Rider Tutorial is definitely the best and most convenient safety feature in both the hoverboards.

When riding for the first time, the hoverboards provide step-by-step training.

The speed will also be limited to 4.3mph during the Rider Tutorial.

After completing 0.6 miles, you can increase the speed to 6.2pmh.

When the tutorial is complete, you can disable the speed limiter using the app and enjoy top speeds.

Also, both the Segway Ninebot S and S-Plus are UL2272 certified.

It means that the hoverboards have high standards to meet in terms of electrical and fire safety.

The battery has passed several tests, and there won’t be any problem of catching fire or sparking.

Additionally, both these models have built-in safety feature that reduces the speed of the ride if it exceeds the safe limit.

Despite all these safety features, it is recommended to wear safety helmet, gloves and other safety gears while riding.

Price

When comparing any two hoverboards, we always want the one that can deliver the best features at lower price.

Although the Ninebot S and S-Plus are quite similar, their price makes a huge difference!

The Segway Ninebot S has a lower price than the Ninebot S-Plus.

As both the hoverboards exhibit many similar specifications, we think that the price should not vary too much.

However, the only reason for the high price of Ninebot S-Plus would be that it is the successor of the Ninebot S.

The price may differ depending on where you buy.

Segway Ninebot S vs S Plus: Which One Is Better?

After the detailed comparison, we declare Segway Ninebot S-Plus as the winner!

The Segway Ninebot S also offers some great features, especially the compatibility for Gokart, GoKart Pro and Ninebot MechaKit so if you are low on budget, you can buy it. With all the specifications, it is worth the price.

However, if you want an expert hoverboard without compromising on quality and are good on your budget, the Segway Ninebot-Plus should be your ultimate choice.

Although being much higher in price, this hoverboard offers the holder camera and auto-follow mode you will hardly find in any other hoverboard!
